Twiggy shows some greyhound love

Disappointing news from the Retired Greyhound Trust that in 2010 they re-homed 500 LESS greyhounds in the UK than the previous year.

Lots of people work really hard to find just the right forever families for dogs that have finished their racing careers - but the work never stops.

There are nearly 1,000 dogs right now in RGT kennels across the UK waiting for new homes and lots and lots more waiting just for a place in the kennels.

Last year the RGT did find homes for 4,200 greyhounds (including me - yay!!) but they really need to find more.

Now the RGT has got a famous face spreading the word for them that greyhounds make great pets - the famous model Twiggy. The Lady Of The House says Twiggy is a great animal lover. (The LOTH also says it's most unfair that Twiggy never seems to look a day older, but we're not going to hold that against her).

There's this lovely picture of Twiggy and two friends on the RGT website today.

Twiggy said: "I am devastated to hear about the Retired Greyhound Trust's struggle with homing figures. I would urge anyone who is considering a dog to think greyhounds.

"The sooner the charity can find good homes for those in kennels then the sooner they can free up space for the many more who are on the waiting list."

I'm crossing my paws that more people come forward in the UK to offer homes to greyhounds - after finding out that we're not really lots of hard work like some people think.

We can't really share our home with another greyhound because I'm afraid I wouldn't like it. But many many greyhounds get on really well with other pets (including cats).

Anyway, since we can't re-home another greyhound, the LOTH has been on the phone to the RGT today (she thought I was asleep but I was listening really) and she and her friend are planning an RGT fund-raiser for later in the year - which I'm sure she'll get me to tell you about some time in the future.

Why is that, we wonder? Do you think people are just adopting less pets in general because of the economy? Is the economy as poor in the UK as it is here right now???

Well, the economy is tough, so that probably is one big factor. Plus, it seems like there are more and more groups vying for attention and money which makes it tougher, too! We have our paws crossed that your group places lots of hounds this year.

OMD, Mom says she hasn't seen or heard anything about Twiggy in many, many years. She looks great. We hope her involvement has a very positive impact on finding forever homes for these pups.

Good for Twiggy! She hasn't changed much since the last time I saw her decades ago! Funny how that happened! It good to know she's for the rescue of Greyhounds. We have some organizations in this city that try and find the rescues good homes and we just hope that they all do find a great forever home because they deserve one! Lots of love, Debbie and Holly

So sorry to hear about all the greyhounds still looking for homes! I am glad you have a wonderful home, my dear friend, and hope the others find one soon as well.

Oh, a fundraiser! How exciting! And how very nice of the LOTH to do something so very wonderful for other greyhounds. Mom and dad says they would LUV to have a greyhound one day. As long as it got along with our kittehs. My paws are crossed that all those greyhounds someday gets a home of their very own.

Saw this on the RGT site. Hope Twiggy can promote the cause. Have seen her a lot on the M&S adverts.

I try and raise money through selling things on Ebay. Sometimes I do the RGT and other times I do the Alzheimers society.

Let us know details of your fundraiser whe you have them.

So sad that so many wonderful retired greyhounds need homes. We just recently lost our beloved dog and am not quite ready for another one, but I've already made up my mind when the time is right I'll be adopting a greyhound from our local rescue group that I read about in the paper a few months ago. Keep spreading the word.

Oh Chris, that's great news!! I'm sure you won't regret adding a greyhound to the family.

Mr Pip, if you get your own page on facebook I will be there like a flash to "like" you. It's so easy. Thank your mom for "liking" me.

Yes, Trixie, Lily and Sammy-Jo, the recession is pretty rough over here too I'm afraid and all the rescue kennels have been getting lots of pets who have been given up. With greyhounds they are always finishing their racing careers and needing homes anyway even when times are good.

Thanks for coming over to visit us Winnie. You know our human had never thought of rehoming a greyhound. Last year when we were at Mango Minster we met and absolutely fell in love with Bunny, who we see is one of your followers.
She really is the most beautiful dog and we know love greyhounds as much as basset hounds!
Sadly at the moment out humans say their hands are full with the two of us - we are apparently being very bad chasing after deer!
We have clicked on the follow button and although we are signed is as Martha and Bailey for some Bizarre reason we seem to be following you from our mum's stupid dolls house site!!!
We are not at all sure why and will try to fix it.
Doesn't Twiggy look amazing or is it just that greyhound make everyone look good!
love

IT IS SUCH A SHAME FOR GREYHOUNDS, THE PEOPLE WHO EXPLOITE THEM HAVE NO FEELINGS FOR THEM.
I DO NOT KNOW WHAT COULD BE DONE. I AM SURE IF SOME PEOPLE WHO GO TO THE DOG RACEING STOPPED TO THINK WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM THEY MIGHT BOYCOT THE TRACKS.
WE KNOW QUITE A FEW AND THEY ALL SEEM NICE FREINDLY DOGS THEY DID NOT EVEN THINK PIP WAS A RABBIT.
IT IS A SHAME YOU ARE GRUMPY WINNIE YOU WOULD HAVE HAD ANOTHER FURBODY IN YOUR HOME I AM SURE.
I DO HOPE TWIGGY DOES GENERATE MORE INTEREST AND HOMES FOR GREYHOUNDS.
LICKS BOBBY.
PS I BET YOU WOULD THINK PIP WAS A BUNNY.
