Anyone know a dog with this eye condition?

There's been V.E.T visiting since I blogged last.

I've managed to put a few quick updates on my Facebook page - but for blog followers, the story so far goes like this.....

The Lady Of The House rang the vets on Thursday because she and the MOTH thought the eye thingy (which I've had since September) looked a bit bigger again. They thought the 'eye vet' would just say to do a few more drops again (because she'd told us to cut down at Christmas when it had got smaller). But she said she wanted to see me and  I should go straight over.

The 'eye vet' had a good look and said she thought the time had come to 'surgically decluster' it because it wasn't really responding to the steroid drops and cream. So she did some blood tests to check my health ahead of a possible general anaesthetic.

Then she rang back Saturday night to say some of the test results looked a bit odd and she wanted them re-done. When I mentioned this on Facebook one of my 'likers' sent me a link to this really helpful info about what greyhound blood tests are sometimes not like other dogs. (I always KNEW we were special).

So tonight we went to the vets in Stapenhill (nearer where we live) to re-do some blood tests - but THIS time they said I couldn't have anything to eat after breakfast!!! How awful!!! The LOTH made my breakfast an hour later than usual but it didn't help much.

I was very confused this afternoon when it got to dinner time and there was no dinner. I roo-ed a bit (quite a lot if I'm honest) and the LOTH said she thought it was the longest afternoon EVER (and so did I!!).

Anyway, we wait now for the re-done test results to see if they think they should go ahead with the op....but the LOTH is feeling a bit confused about whether we should have it or not and probably needs another long talk to the 'eye vet'. She did talk to them about the article on greyhound blood tests so she is very pleased we had that information thanks to Denise.

This condition (which the 'eye vet' is virtually sure I've got) is called Nodular Granulomatous Episcleritis. It looks like this on me:

It doesn't hurt or affect my vision.

You were all very helpful  and supportive when I blogged about it back in October, but if anyone who's started following me since then has any experience of this NGE eye condition - we'd love to hear from you.

On the PLUS side I got to try 'Sea Jerky' for the first time tonight, They bought some at the vets so I could have a treat as soon as I got out. It's crunchy pieces of dried fish skin and it's GORGEOUS!!

I'm sorry, Winnie. I don't know anything helpful abouts your eye condition but I just wanted to lend my sympathies to you cuz of having to go without first breakfast and then dinner! Humans are KERAZY! Why do they think what goes in our tummies is gonna affect what's in our blood? Most obviously, they've been misinformed, if you asks me.

My paws are crossed for your tests and I hope you don't have to go hungry anymore any time soon.

Wiggles & Wags,
mayzie

My goodness Winnie. I have never heard of this condition. I checked out the site, and it looks scary. The good thing about the day and age we're living in though is that you can find out so much via the Internet and through other people. I'm sure that some people out there have heard of this condition and have successfully treated it. Sending a hug - I bet this has been stressful for all of you!

The first thing I thought was to ask if they knew we Greyhounds have special levels in our blood. I'm glad somebody already sent you the link!

If you'd asked about atypical pannus or blocked tear ducts, we could have helped you out, but we don't know much about what you're talking about. Does it have the potential to develop into something bad? I can definitely see having it removed if it does, but if the eye drops can help keep it at bay, maybe that would be a good option, too.

Winnie...I don't know anything about this eye condition. I'm glad your family is taking such good care of you though. I'm also glad you got some yummy fish skin after almost being starved to death for the tests. Paws crossed for a good result.

Winnie, we wish we knew something about this condition to help you, but it is new to us too. Are you seeing a dog eye specialist - they seem to have all the best knowledge. Hope they can find a solution to make your eye be better.

Barbie would make a huge racket if she didn't get her dinner! She is bad enough if her servants are late preparing it for her!

Winnie, we're sorry your poor eye is bothering you. We wish we knew what to suggest but we have no experience with it. But we are sure crossing paws that all comes back ok with your bloodwork. Please have the LOTH keep us posted, ok?

Don't know anything about it. Kendra had a little growth once, it made her eye water all the time. It was removed and she was fine afterwards.

We LOVE sea jerky. We just finished the bag....it was sooooo crunchy and good!

Just checked out the bloods, etc., for Greyhounds. I'm going to print it off, as it's very good info.

Thanks everybody. You are wonderful. What would I do without you?

I'm glad if the bloods info is useful to you too, Sue. It's so great.

Benny and Lily, we'll have a look at the stuff you use... any info is great to have. I think my eye thingy is auto-immune, which is maybe different from an allergy?

I saw one theory that said UV exposure over time could kick it off (I think Bunny/Houndstooth has mentioned this before too) so maybe when I was racing I spent lots of time out in the sun.

I hope one day someone else might find this post and it might help them too.

Yes, Op Pack, my eye vet knows her stuff about eyes - but maybe not about greyhounds. Bless her, she said when she first saw me 'OOh Isn't your collar tight?!' It wasn't of course it was just a normal greyhound collar high up behind my ears. The LOTH explained and showed her how she could still got two fingers comfortably down inside it but if it was any looser I'd pull my head out and run for it!! But a couple of appointments later she said again: 'That collar's very tight'. I'm glad we have the greyhound bloods info for her.

Oh Winnie, that doesn't look fun. Sorry, we don't know any dogs with this condition. I have cataracts, but that's about it.

I am sending you lots of good wishes and prayers, my friend!
